Who says grooming is only for humans? As hygiene and good appearance are becoming a concern for majority of people, and reasonably so, their four-legged best friends are dragged with the campaign. Pet grooming has become an investment of time, effort, love, creativity and, of course, money. But, since animals can’t tell you outright if they are feeling good or bad about the change, how will you be able to tell what is truly best for them? Overdoing and slacking in grooming are both an offence to your pet. To know what should be in your checklist for do’s and don’ts, here are five reminders every pet lover should be aware of.
The number one enemy on any fur and skin are the insects, particularly the fleece and the lies. An unclean crowning glory, especially for dogs and cats, can cause multiple complications such as scratching, fur shedding and skin infections. There are different products specifically designed for pets to remove these unwanted creatures without hurting their skin in the process. If you are unsure which product to choose and which has the best treatment, you can ask a veterinarian to assist you in pet grooming and keep them healthy. Good quality shampoo is also a necessity, not only for appearance, but also for health. A shampoo that has too much chemicals can cause dry skin and damage the hair strands. Lack in shampooing can, in turn, make the skin dirty and add infection or scratching. Aside from these, a harmful shampoo can also cause odor and shedding of the fur, a messy feature which you would surely want to avoid.
Pet grooming reminder number three is to get a good comb, unless you have those shaven or furless types for a pet. Choose a wide tooth comb in smoothing the tangles instead of fine ones to avoid hair loss or the damaging of the strands. Aside from the fact that it is also easier to use, it would hurt if you force to straighten out their tresses. Pets have a right to a healthy smile. Sparkling whites are not an asset for humans only because your pets have them too. Cavities and plaque deposits are unhealthy for your friends, and the lack of attention can cause dental disorders which, in worse cases, can lead all the way inside their body like the digestive tract. So, brush them up regularly and also have a doctor inspect them. Get toe nails cut to a considerable length. Long nails can damage the soft skin in their foot pads while if cut too short, will cause damage to the skin resulting to wounds. Be careful in this part of pet grooming as their safety literally lies in your hands.
Lastly, there are pet owners who just love to accessorize and dress up their pet. These do look cute, but if done overly, can cause discomfort and might eventually strangle your pet. Some are also made of materials that are easy to swallow or chew on, so be mindful of them. If your dog or cat looks like they are comfortable with it, then you can go ahead and get them to wear those. If at the slightest inconvenience, better not force it.
Pet grooming reflects how much you care for your pets. Aside from the satisfaction in seeing them healthy, a good treatment can do your pride good.
