Among all dog breeds, it is the Pomeranian that is widely known to be easy to train. Intelligent that he is, the Pomeranian is very much alert if what is going on around him. The breed is also known to have an independent mind and may get a bit stubborn in some ways. When training your pet Pomeranian, it is therefore important to be consistent. The right attitude is all that matters.
These are the things that are worth considering when training your pet Pomeranian:
• Being brilliant and independent-minded, your Pomeranian may not easily follow what you say. It is therefore essential that you communicate to him that you are in control and that you are after his welfare. Your pet should also be aware of the consequences of their actions- those that merit praise or rewards, and those actions they should not do. You have to be steady, persistent, and unswerving.
• Although a Pomeranian is independent, he is depending on you to show him what is acceptable behavior and what is not. As early as possible, you have to set the rules and show him the right behavior.
• Don’t confuse your pet with so many varying training plans or programs. There is no harder training than that conducted to a baffled Pomeranian.
• Your Pomeranian can exhibit mood swings at times. He can bark endlessly at the slightest provocation. You have to give him a feeling of security, and depending on situation, you may have to bear with his temper occasionally. But, it is important that he knows he has to obey you, and that you mean what you say.
• To housebreak your Pomeranian, again consistency matters. At early stages of housebreaking, you may need to supervise your pet so that he knows his usual “comfort room”, until this becomes a good habit. Letting him loose may lead to bad habit.
• In training you pet, you have to start small like sitting quietly when he has to. You can’t expect a Pomeranian to immediately follow big things like drinking his medicine or rolling onto his back when you don’t start with small things.
• Teach your Pomeranian how to communicate. This doesn’t mean that he has to speak your language. This means that he must be able to understand your language and communicate with you in such a way that you understand his language. You will find this such an easy and enjoyable task as Pomeranians learn very easily. They can be more like humans at times.
• Each simple act that you train your pet with develops his thinking and makes him want to think some more. Your Pomeranian will gain confidence and the habit to do what is right and what is expected of him and to avoid what is unbecoming.
Above all, when you train your pet Pomeranian, you must show love, respect, and the right attitude yourself. Your pet will be more than glad to return the favor.
